History

Dr.U Tin is regarded as the first fulltime anaesthetist of the Yangon General Hospital. He worked up to 1963 and was succeeded by Professor Dr.J.Chari who started the ‘first’ postgraduate course of the university, Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) in 1964. Professor Dr. Thein Thein Khaing initiated the Master in Anaesthesiology course, M.Med Sc (Anaesthesiology) in 1992 and Professor Dr. Tin Myint organized the Doctorate Course, Dr.Med.Sc (Anaesthesiology) in 2001.

Departmental Objectives

The undergraduate teaching is directed towards introducing the clinical science of anaesthesia based on Physiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Pathology, combined with observation of the practice in the operating rooms. Training of the post-graduate students aims to provide wide clinical experience the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills, the development of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others. They are encouraged to develop presentation skills and be involved in clinical audits in anaesthesia, emergency and intensive care. They are expected to do critical appraisal of the scientific literature and do research work under the supervision of senior staff.

Teaching/Learning Opportunities

  1. The student can be involved in all clinical specialties of anaesthesia.
  2. The department has three mini-libraries.
  3. The department has three internet access points with 24/7
  4. The department has one anaesthetic conference room and three lecture rooms designed to meet the educational needs with teachings aids such as whiteboard, OHP, LCD Projector, TV-Video, audiovisual closed circuit TV.
  5. The teaching staff from UM (1) have clinical responsibilities, and the clinical staff from the YGH are affiliated hospitals actively participate in the teaching program.
