Background History

Diabetes and Endocrinology service was started in Yangon General Hospital since 1991 by Professor Kyaw Myint Tun and was supported by lectures Dr. Win Cho, Dr. Nu Nu Maw and Dr.Win Win Myint. Diabetes project was established in 1995 due to persistent effort by Professor Kyaw Myint Tun. Diabetes clinic was handed over to Professor Khin Ye Myint in 2001 and the clinic was run by medical ward 17 & 18. The service was reinforced by Professor Than Than Aye when she came back from UK. Successors continued Endocrine service and joined the Myanmar Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (MSEM) and participated in activities of MSEM and contribute to Doctor of Medical Science (Diabetes and Endocrinology) Course examination in University of Medicine (2), Yangon and Defense Service Medical Academy (DSMA).

The Department of Endocrinology of University of Medicine (1), Yangon (Yangon General Hospital) can be only established in December 2015. Professor Moe Wint Aung was appointed as professor and then Professor Khin Saw Than was appointed as Professor and Head of the department. Diabetes and Endocrinology inpatient service and outpatient clinic have been extended (Diabetes Foot Clinic, Diabetes Eye Screening Service, Fracture Prevention Service Clinic and Endocrine Disease Clinic). The Doctor of Medical Science (Endocrinology) Course started in January, 2017. Three students were selected for the very first batch of the department.

Departmental Objectives

  1. To develop sound foundation of basic endocrinology and metabolism upon which continued medical education by self-directed learning so as to make himself / herself updated.
  2. To develop skills in analysis of clinical findings and data, decision making in the management of common endocrinological problems as a competent endocrinologist
  3. To develop knowledge and skill in conducting clinical research so as to nurture habit of conducting relevant research to advance the knowledge and practice of endocrinology in the country
  4. To develop proficient communication skills so as to enable to establish good relationship with colleagues, patients and their relative, based on principles of medical ethics, professionalism and culturally sensitive behaviors
  5. To develop leaders in endocrinology who can dedicate to the advancement of the discipline and work in harmony with other medical professionals, societies and public
