Background History

Starting on the 2nd of June 2004, Rheumatology services were delivered in Myanmar as outpatients Rheumatology clinic in Yangon General Hospital. On the 26th September 2009, Rheumatology Unit was established as a component of general medicine ward 1 & 2 of Yangon General Hospital to receive inpatients. The volume of outpatient and inpatient have grown steadily that on the auspicious day of 26th December 2013, the Rheumatology Department has emerged to meet the needs of the country and was moved to a newly built 500-bedded Specialist Hospital Yangon. It becomes one of the clinical departments of the University of Medicine (1) Yangon in the same year.
The Rheumatology Department, although one of the newest departments of the medical services in Myanmar, has made strides within a short period of time in terms of patient care, training and research. According to the year 2016 data, there were a total of 2942 admissions including 1320 new cases within a 12-month period. Outpatient visit numbers 8543 in total in 2016.
Specialist training delivery was started in the year 2011 as Doctor of Medical Science in Rheumatology. The aim of this training is to produce all rounded clinicians specializing in Rheumatology delivering state-of-the-art patient care and keeping in pace with the international standard of research and development. It is a three-year clinical and academic training incorporating hands-on clinical practice sandwiched with an optional one-year oversea clinical training and writing up a thesis. The department is a center for undergraduate and postgraduate Rheumatology training for the medical universities.
The department also stands as a resource center for the research conducted by the various other departments of the medical and allied universities.
