Dr. Rai Mra was appointed as the first clinical haematologist in 1991 and he founded the haematology unit at the general extension building of Yangong General Hospital in 1994. The Department of Clinical Haematology was upgraded in 1997 and is the main referral center for patients with a wide range of haematological disorders from all over the country. A professorial chair was created in 1997 and Prof. Rai Mra was a first professor and head of the department.
The department was moved to new building beside the National Blood Center in 2010. It provides the clinical services, teaching and research activities. The clinical services include inpatients and out-patients clinic at Yangon General Hospital.
The department also assists with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in haematology from trainees from the University of Medicine (1) and other universities. It main teaching activity provides training in postgraduate haematology for master courses of medical science in internal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, pathology and dermatology. Postgraduate trainees are posted for varying periods, usually one month at a time, at the department for practical experience in haematology. In 2003, a three-year doctorate course in clinical hematology was started and first doctorate candidate in haematology qualified in 2005. Now seven clinical haematologists were successfully completed the doctorate training until 2016.
