Department of Neuro Surgery

Background History

Neurosurgery  began in 1966 with a single bed in the General Surgical Ward with one Neurosurgeon, Dr. U Saw Nyunt. The service has expanded to 150 bedded Neurosurgical Department at YGH and plans to expand and upgrade to 200 beds within few years. The first pioneer Neurosurgeon was trained in U.S.A, Canada and UK and he had trained 3 neurosurgeons as 2nd generation. Currently, the number of neurosurgeons in Myanmar is altogether 25 with 5 retirees and 20 in-service. In addition to one neurosurgical centre in Yangon General Hospital, affiliated to University of Medicine 1, Yangon, another neurosurgical center was  established in 1998 in Mandalay General Hospital affiliated to University of Medicine, Mandalay. There is also expansion of Neurosurgical department at Nay Pyi Daw.
