Background History

The Department of Tropical and Infectious Diseases is a new medical speciality established by the Myanmar Ministry of Health in January 2016 in Universities of Medicine number 1 and 2 in Yangon, and in Mandalay.
In the past, Tropical Medicine was a separate clinical speciality discipline and the Tropical Medicine Unit was established at the Rangoon General Hospital since 1964. A post graduate programme of a Diploma in Preventive and Tropical Medicine (DP&TM) was offered in 1965 as a ten-month course. In 1982, the Tropical Medicine Unit was absorbed into a general medical ward, and the diploma programme replaced by a one-year Master of Medical Science (Public Health) course till 1988. Then in 1989, a two-year programme of M.Med.Sc. (Preventive and Tropical Medicine) replaced the previous programme. Tropical medicine was reintroduced in the course since then but only as a portion and general medical departments had to cover for the teaching of it. Since 2016, University of Medicine – 1 of Yangon has established the Department of Tropical and Infectious Diseases as a medical speciality with part of the Yangon General Hospital constituting as its teaching unit.
