Department of Gastroenterology

 

Brief History

The Department of Gastroenterology was founded in 19 February 1982 by senior consultant Physician Dr U Aung Myint and Dr Daw Ni Lei Win as the first gastroenterology unit in Myanmar. Dr U Aung Myint was later promoted to the Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology.

Present Gastroentrology department was moved to Daw Pu Building on 14 May 2014.

Departmental Objectives

  1. To provide tertiary medical care for gastrointestinal cases in Myanmar with the most modern medical facilities
  2. To train future gastroenterologists for Myanmar
  3. To do medical research on common gastrointestinal diseases in Myanmar.
  4. Ethics and professionalism
  5. Communication skills
  6. Contribution to health care
  7. Health education to the doctors, nurses, medical staffs and communities.
  8. To extend good international relationship, collaboration and teleconferencing.

Ministry of Health and Sports recognized and opened as National Endoscopy Center at YGH Gastroenterology Department on February 2015.

International accreditation

  1. YGH – Gastroenterology Department was recognized as WGO Training Center, Myanmar on 23rd March 2015 by President of WGO (World Gastroenterology Organization).
  2. Also recognized as WEO (World Endoscopy Organization) Training Center, Myanmar on December 2015.
  3. MOU with Nagoya University Japan for Endoscopy Training since February 2015.
  4. Member of APSDE and WEO since October 2015.
  5. Collaboration with British society of Gastroenterology since September 2016

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday – upper and lower GI endoscopy
Tuesday and Friday – ERCP, EUS and Double balloon enteroscopy
From Monday to Friday – Video Capsule Endoscopy, Oesophageal pHmetry , Oesophageal Manometry and Urea Breath test.

Endoscopy Rooms

  1. 4 Endoscopy rooms – 2 rooms were equipped with C-Arm and Fluroscopy Machine.
  2. 1 Endoscopy room for GI neuromotility study.
  3. 1 lecture room
  4. 1 recovery room ( 8 bedded)

Teaching

  1. Gastroenterology Doctorate from University of medicine (1), since 2003.
  2. 2nd year and 3rd year internal medicine students from University of medicine (1), since 1986, UM Magway, since 2000.
  3. 3rd year pediatrics post graduate students from University of medicine (1), UM Magway DSMA, since 2000.
  4. 1 month basic endoscopy training for doctor and nurses from district hospital, since 2015 June.
  5. Basic Gastroenterology Teaching for Dermatology, Medical Oncology and post graduate family medicine students, since 2000.
  6. Under graduate students from University of Medicine (1).
  7. Training of Nurses from YGH GI Unit locally and internationally
  8. Training of Nurses from District Hospital for Basic Endoscopy every months since 2015 June.

Gastroenterology text books, journals and thesis are available at YGH-GI library since 19 February 2015.

Research

Aim – To create scientific discovery relevant to Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary diseases and translate those discovery into clinical practice.

  1. Outcome of obstructive jaundice after ERCP
  2. H pylori eradication with triple and concomitant treatment
  3. Clinical prediction of oesophageal varices with clinical parameter
  4. Virulence strain of H pylori
