 THE YANGON GENERAL HOSPITAL (1873)

In 1873, the wooden building of Rangoon General Hospital was constructed at the Junction of Bogyoke Aung San Road (Commissioner Road) and Shwe Dagon Pagoda Road i.e. at the site of the present new Bogyoke Market in front of the Department of Medical Sciences. It was followed by the establishment of the Dufferin Hospital (the present Central Women Hospital) also known as Gymkhana Hospital in 1887. Governor Sir H.S. Barnes laid the foundation stone of the Rangoon General Hospital at the site of the present Yangon General Hospital on 6th May 1905 and the building was completed in 1911.
