As
the government of Bengal Province limited the number of
student admission into Calcutta Medical College, the Burmese
nationals and others residing in Burma could not take higher
medical studies.

Burma, 1920- 22).
The
University of Yangon appointed a board at the end of 1922 to
investigate the possibilities of making an early start in
the study of medicine in Burma. A Medical Department at
University College of the University of Rangoon was formed
in 1923. It was first accommodated in the Government Medical
School. The University introduced a course for the Bachelor
of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B., B.S.) degree in
the same year. The educational standard of the course would
meet the requirements of the General Medical Council of
Great Britain. The candidates for M.B., B.S degree course
were required to have passed the intermediate examinations
of Yangon University or one of the examinations recognized
by the General Medical Council of Great Britain.
