The
first proposal to establish a University in Burma was made
in 1892. At that time the Rangoon College and Judson College
were affiliated to Calcutta University.
The desire to establish a University free from control of
Calcutta University was expressed by the press, the Burmese
public leaders and the defunct Education Syndicate, as
nationalism was on the rise in Burma.
The Government of Burma submitted the draft constitution of
a University to the Government of India in 1913 and then
again in 1916.
This scheme was held up by the outbreak of the First World
War.
After the war, Burmese people protest the delay to implement
this proposal.
Finally the Yangon University was established in 1920 after
the promulgation of the University of Rangoon Act. The
Yangon College (University College) and the Judson College
became the constituent colleges of the Rangoon University.
