Background History

Department of Hepatology was founded in 1977 with a total of 10 beds in ward 1&2 of Yangon General Hospital by Professor U Khin Maung Tin and in 1980, he established a separate unit named Liver Unit, in a separate building of Yangon General Hospital. Liver Unit became Department of Hepatology in 1997 with improvements in man-power (Hepatologists), modernized equipments as well as teaching facilities and the Professorial chair was created in the same year. In 1990, the department was well-known among the patients with liver diseases and became the center of excellence in the treatment of Hepatitis B, cirrhosis of liver and liver cancer. It was headed by Professor U Khin Maung Win. In 2001, Hepatology Doctoral Course was first established in affiliation with Institute of Medicine (1), Yangon. Since then, 15 hepatologists were trained to serve the country in the area of hepatology. In early 2014, Department of Hepatology was moved from Yangon General Hospital to a new building in 500 bedded Yangon Specialty Hospital. Today, Department of Hepatology has become the main centre for treating patients with liver diseases, doing clinical and experimental researches and training undergraduate, post-graduate and doctorate students.
