The Department of Nephrology was first founded in 1971 by Dr Hla Mon in ward 1 & 2 of Yangon General Hospital. At that time, acute renal failure patients were treated with intermittent peritoneal dialysis which was the only treatment option available. In 1978, Hajima Daw Pu donated a new building for the Department of Nephrology and on 16th October 1979 the Department of Nephrology was relocated to that building. This new renal unit provided improved renal care-not only peritoneal dialysis, but renal biopsy can be performed on patients with glomerulonephritis. On 6th February 1996, Haemodialysis unit was opened. This was subsequently followed by the first successful renal transplant operation performed by Myanmar doctors in May 1997. In May 1997 the Department of Nephrology became a member of the International Society of Nephrology. Four months later in September 1997 the National Kidney Foundation was created. In November 1997 Diploma in Renal Medicine course was opened and altogether 5 candidates obtained the diploma in December 1998. In 2001, Dr Med Sc (Nephrology) course was started and 10 candidates obtained the Doctorate degree till 2016. The Renal Medical Department has been moved to 500 beded Yangon Speciality Hospital on 20-12-2014. And Haemodialysis unit has been expanded and kidney trasplant has also been practised more frequently and finished 55 patients to date.
