The department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established in 1958 at Yangon General Hospital. It was one of the earliest specialty departments of Yangon General Hospital and situated on the Bogyoke Aung San Road, Latha Township, and Yangon. It provides both in-patient (50 beds +) and out-patient rehabilitation care, which are approximately 800 out- patients taking treatment every week.
Departmental objectives are
Types of disabilities treated are neurological rehabilitation; stroke, TBI, parkisonism, motor neurone diseases, transverse myelitis, peripheral neuropathy, facial palsy etc, fracture Rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, non-traumatic paraplegia and quadriplegia, musculoskeletal pain, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, rheumatological rehabilitation including Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), gouty arthritis, SLE ,Systemic Sclerosis,etc, leprosy rehabilitation and other skin diseases,rehabilitation of burn and ICU patients, obstetrics and gynaecological rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, osteoporosis and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR).
Other hospitals which are collaborated with the department are National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), Yangon Orthopedic Hospital (YOH), New Yangon General Hospital (NYGH), Yangon Children Hospital (YCH), North Okkalapa General Hospital (NOGH), East Yangon General Hospital, West Yangon General Hospital, Insein General Hospital and Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital
International Rehabilitation Institutions and Associations which are collaborated with the department are International Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM), Asian Oceanian Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (AOSPRM), ASEAN Rehabilitation Medicine Society (ARMA), Royal College of Physiatrists of Thailand, Philippine Academy of Physiatrists, Singapore Rehabilitation Medicine Society and International Society for the Study of Pain (IASP).
