History

Although Institute of Medicine (1) was established in October 1964, the Surgical Department in YGH has been started since 1927 by Colonel Scott as Professor / Head.
Among the 15 Professor / Heads, Dr. U Kyee Paw had the longest service as a Professor / Head for 19 years. Professor U Kyee Paw performed thoracic surgery in wards 17 & 18, Professor Kyaw Maung founded the laboratory in ward 13 & 14 and Professor U Khin Maung Latt from ward 7 & 8 started surgical museum with specimens. Master Degree course was started in 1970 – 71 and Doctorate degree course in 1997. Diploma in surgery in 1998 produced 10 graduates, but the course is terminated.

Undergraduate Course (M.B.,B.S)

Final Part II

At the end of the instructive year, the learner should have acquired:

Knowledge

  1. basic surgical principles of diagnosis, management, and prognosis
  2. common surgical disorders and injuries commonly encountered in this country
  3. common surgical/ trauma emergencies/ basic surgical procedure.

Skills

  1. history taking and clinical examination for the diagnosis of common surgical disorders and injuries
  2. interpreting results of relevant investigations
  3. delivering health education emphasizing preventive aspects of traumatic and surgical disorders.

Attitudes

  1. patient management and care using available resources
  2. providing community health care
  3. continuing medical education, self directed learning and conducting basic research relevant to the environment he works in
  4. observing moral and legal codes of medical ethics
  5. recognizing surgical and non-surgical conditions that require appropriate
and prompt referral because he knows his own limitations.
