The objective of this compilation is to provide in printed form an annotated bibliography of theses and dissertations in health and medical sciences submitted to the Institutes of Medicine 1 and 2, Yangon and the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay, Myanmar for the Master of Medical Science (M.Med.Sc.) degree during the years 1971 to 1990.Several bibliographies had been compiled on the subject but none widely available. Partially completed bibliographies are also available in electronic form at the libraries of various Institutes of Medicine and the Central Biomedical Library, Department of Medical Research.  This present work is an attempt to provide a guide to the literature to the interested researcher who does not have access to the libraries that hold the bibliographies nor the actual theses. The entries in this bibliography are mainly dependent on the availability of the theses at the parent institution or at the Central Biomedical Library, Department of Medical   Research Two bibliographies of theses submitted to the Institute of Medicine 1, Yangon had previously been compiled in partial fulfillment for the Diploma in Library Science, University of Yangon and this Bibliography depended heavily on them.  Theses submitted to the Institute of Medicine-1,Yangon are therefore almost all included. Lists were obtained from the various libraries of the Institutes of Medicine, Yangon and Institutes of Medicine, Mandalay of theses held by them for the years 1971-1990.Annotations were made based on the abstracts, and in some cases actual abstracts were included which explains the lengthiness or the unevenness of the annotations. Some theses contained neither abstract nor summary and in such cases where the theses are physically not available annotations are not given. Some theses have not been included in this bibliography due to their unavailability

Entries are arranged alphabetically by the subject of the course and within each course they are entered alphabetically by candidate (author). A detailed subject index and an author index are provided for easy use.

Form of entry  All Myanmar names in this bibliography has been entered following the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2^nd. ed. where Myanmar names are entered in full. e.g.  Khin Khin Ohn  but in the case of names with prefixes such as Ma Tin Yee or Maj. Thein Aung the names are entered as Tin Yee, Ma and Thein Aung, Maj. respectively. This is also true in the case of ethnic names such as Karen, Shan, etc. e.g. Sai Kham Leik is entered as Kham Leik, Sai. Western Christian names with Myanmar surnames are entered and indexed like Western names e.g. Mary Hmwe is entered in the inverted form under the surname Hmwe followed by the Christian name Mary.

Subject index  MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) is the thesaurus used in the compilation of the subject index. As this is the authority list used by the National Library of Medicine of the United States of America, the American form of spelling has been used. e.g. Goiter instead of Goitre. Cross-references are provided wherever necessary.

Holding information   At the end of each entry, codes are given denoting the location of the actual thesis or the library in which the thesis may be found.
