Governance
University of Medicine (1), Yangon (UM1), is a public institution focusing on training medical doctors and scientists related to medicine. It is one of the state-owned medical universities under Ministry of Health of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The directorate, the Department of Human Resources for Health organizes and coordinates administrative and financial matter while Academic matters are managed by the Academic Body and Administrative Body of UM1.
The Administrative Body
The administrative body is chaired by the Rector of the University of Medicine (1), Yangon, with the Pro-rector as Vice-Chairperson. Members include:
Two Rectors from the Universities under the Ministry of Health and Sports
Medical Superintendent of Yangon General Hospital
Heads of the departments
Deputy Head of Admin/Finance Division
Registrar
Assistant Registrars

Duties of the Administrative Body
To act in accordance with rules, directives and orders relating to financial matters
To prescribe and enforce rules and regulations for students
To supervise matters relating to the estate
To supervise sports and cultural activities of students
To supervise and promote the health of the staff and students
To select students who deserve stipends or free tuition
The Academic Body
The academic body is chaired by the Rector of the University of Medicine (1), Yangon, with the Pro-rector as Vice-Chairperson. Members include:

Heads of Postgraduate Courses
Medical Superintendents of Affiliated Teaching Hospitals

Duties of the Academic Body
To collaborate with the various Boards of Studies and steer the courses in keeping with the political, economic and social systems of the Union of Myanmar
To inspect the curricula and syllabi put up by the various Boards of Studies, approve, and forward it to the Council of Academic Bodies
To supervise whether teaching is in accordance with the approved curricula and syllabi
To hold examinations and publish the results
To confer degrees, diplomas and, award prizes
To recommend the creation of new departments
To scrutinize and prescribe textbooks to be used at the University
To introduce postgraduate courses in collaboration with the teaching departments
